‘Scents-u-all Love’ was a public space installation designed for the Chelsea Fringe in 2014. It explores multisensory design; specifically how architecture & public spaces might be designed around our sense of smell. The installations culminated with an interactive public art event. This project was made in collaboration with Curt Brown of Green truC studio.

We have split our project into 5 posts:

  1. The first post explores our project ideas, multisensory design and the development of our design for construction and installation.
  2. The second post describes the public space installations at Broadgate; for the Chelsea Fringe Festival and then outside Broadgate tower.
  3. The third post describes scent oriented design installations at Canada Square and Bell Square.
  4. The fourth post describes the installation at Wimbledon Piazza and the interactive public art event. (this post)
  5. The fifth and final post describes the construction process. We present a guide of how to make a scented chair for yourself.

Wimbledon Piazza – Love Wimbledon Live Art Event

The final public installation of the planted chairs was at Wimbledon Piazza. This was a curious site, a circular ‘square’ abutted by a road, with an alleyway opposite. We worked in collaboration with Love Wimbledon, who manages this space.

The tour of the Scents-u-all-love installation culminated in an interactive public art event, which we curated. Working with street artists Stu Nova, Otto Schade , Ray Salvatore Harman (RSH), Charlotte Posner and The Colour Kid. The artists took a chair each and painted them over the course of a Sunday, explaining their techniques to those curious to stop and watch. Each artist produced their own unique design and each caught the imagination of different groups of people.

An early start for Otto Schade
Charlotte Postner draws a younger audience
The Colour Kid using stencils & patterns in bold colours
Ray Salvatore Harmon (RSH) freestyling it, he capturing the attention of a superfluity of nuns!
Stu Nova talks art with the crowd about stencil work.
Colours of the Colour Kid
The finished pieces
Otto calls it a wrap!

The live art event combined the authorship of our project with the five different street artists. Painting on walls and timber hoarding is something they are used to doing, and our seat walls became a blank canvas for them to claim artistically. After this event we agreed to donate the chairs to the Hammersmith & Fulham Mental Health Unit, where they were put in a courtyard for their patients to enjoy.

The tour of our Scents-u-all-love installation through London is shown in the map below.
